Charcoal project: Art in the Buffer Zone

At the Timothy’s Art & Bar on Saturday, October 8,  at 9 p.m is going to be presented the conceptual framework of the project: Charchoal project: Art in the Buffer Zone. The project is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 15th of October 2011  at the Checkpoint  Pyrgos-Limnitis inside the Buffer Zone area.

The location where the project will take place has a symbolic value. In Greek the Buffer Zone is also known as Dead Zone (ÍåêñÞ Æþíç), connotating death and destruction. Charcoal, the basic material that the artists are using is symbolic as well for its dark and a remnant of fire  We have chosen the Dead Zone a place of death and devastation, a place of conflict and separation to create works of art and to bring together friends and artists. Creating pieces of art out of charcoal we mean to reverse darkness, death and destruction and produce life, friendship and commonwealth.

The curator of the project is the art theorist Christodoulos Callinos and the leading artist Rinos Stefani. The leaders of the project anticipating that other artists would be interested to join this effort and share their similar feelings and creativeness with the members of the main team would welcome to join the project. After a performance section  by the artists   Oya Akin, Gurgenc Korkmazel and Dervish Dervisoglou, Rinos Stefani and Susan Vargas-Stefani, the rest of the artists and the public will be invited to  involve in the happening to create art works or any other artistic expression   engaging the symbols and the concepts that the project is interested.

All the artworks that will be produced as well as the photographic and the video material from the project will be the material for a catalogue that the curator of the event is going to edit and for an exhibition that will take place later this year in Nicosia. The results and the experience of the project is going to be presented at the international conference Arts and Social Justice  that is taking place at the University of Nicosia  from 20-22 of Oct. 2011.

Artist and the public that are interested to join the project they have to contact the curator of the project Mr. Christodoulos Callinos 99784549 – lakiscon@hotmail.com
